For many adults, "play" might seem like a luxury or even a frivolous activity. But for children, it’s much more than that. According to Dr. Nick Cornett, a professor of counseling at John Brown University, play is the most natural way children connect with themselves and the world.
Play: The Language of Childhood
Dr. Cornett emphasizes that play is not just for fun—it's foundational. As he explains, "We actually have a saying that play is the language of children." [00:21] Children feel most authentic when they're playing, and as Mr. Rogers once famously said, "play is really the work of childhood." [01:10]
At camp, this "work" is amplified. Dr. Cornett describes it as "play... done on steroids." [01:37] Camp provides children with both quantity and quality time to simply be kids and experience the numerous benefits that play offers.
Building Courage and Confidence
One of the most valuable aspects of camp is the opportunity it provides for kids to step outside their comfort zones. Whether it's hiking, climbing, or riding horses, these activities encourage healthy risk-taking.
These experiences help kids develop a sense of courage and confidence that they can carry with them for the rest of their lives. As Dr. Cornett notes, it helps them realize, "I can do things that are difficult... I have what it takes to step up and step out." [02:25]
Investing in Things Eternal
While many summer activities focus on recreation, New Life Ranch has an intentional focus on faith. We carve out dedicated time for kids to reflect on their relationship with God.
Dr. Cornett believes this focus is what truly sets New Life Ranch apart: "That really focused intentional time to think about yourself and to think about the Lord is... a value added... that you just can't get anywhere." [03:14] By providing this spiritual foundation, camp is not just a summer vacation—it's an investment in "things eternal." [03:20]
Camp is a place where children can learn formative life lessons, build lasting relationships, and grow in their faith. It’s an experience every child deserves!
